Timeout Kids recommends the Mayer July exhibition

The Jewish Museum presents an exhibition of paintings by Mayer Kirshenblatt, based on his childhood memories of prewar Poland.

Your little genius can’t remember where he put his backpack five minutes ago, but Mayer Kirshenblatt, 93, recalls minute details from his childhood in Apt (now Opatów), Poland.

At age 73 Kirshenblatt taught himself to paint and began composing scenes based on his early memories for his daughter, Barbara, who’d requested stories about his youth. Dozens of his works will be on view starting this month at the Jewish Museum.

Self-portraits appear in many of the depictions of religious and social rituals; Kirshenblatt is the boy wearing blue. In addition, visitors will find an unusual three-dimensional installation: a table-top-sized toy theater, filled with paper figures and colorful mini backdrops, that was created in 2004. In an accompanying video, we see the artist moving these figures while narrating their tale in a production inspired by his painting Boy in the White Pajamas. The title character, whose parents have lost all their other sons, attempts to trick the angel of death by wearing only white.

The video includes one of the exhibit’s few allusions to the Holocaust. The artist’s aim, he has said, is to pass down a picture of European Jews that highlights how they lived rather than the way they died. Parents preferring to sidestep the weighty subject might want to visit on May 10 or 17, when guides will walk kids through the exhibit, being careful to avoid the darker works.—Jill Cornfield
